The weatherman gets it wrong again today. What was forecasted for a iffy cloudy day turns out to start out as a sunny cloudless morning. The beach by our condo already has some early risers waiting for the sun rise, they also gets to see some shale plumes in the distance. For whatever reason, I think whales tend to be quite active during sunrise and sunsets, they surface quite a bit.
Waimea Canyon
So, a quick change of plan because of the improving weather. The Waimea Canyon and Koke’e State Park should be clear, especially in the morning. The canyon does not disappoint. This is the third time we are visiting the canon, every time is like experiencing it the first time. Pu’u o Kila lookout (first photo above) at the end of route 550 has a magnificent view of the Na Pali coast, the fin ridges makes the valley one of the best views of the Pacific. A quick tip for the first time visitors: Go to Pu’u o Kila lookout first thing in the morning, skipping all the Waimea Canyon lookout points along the way. Pu’u o Kila is usually clear in the morning, but ocean fog rolls in later on in the day. The other thing is the lookout points along the way have better light in the afternoon.
